Treatment for Dry Eyes
Many people occasionally experience the symptoms of dry eyes, and it is usually little more than a nuisance. However, for patients who suffer from persistently dry eyes, the symptoms become more than just an irritation. LipiFlow® treatment performed at our Chicago practice can provide an excellent solution for dry eyes. This treatment provides long-term results by resolving the glandular blockage that causes dry eyes. Chicago Cornea Consultants are proud to be the first practice, and one of only three in the area, to offer LipiFlow® treatment for dry eyes. Contact any of our three locations (Chicago, Highland Park or Hoffman Estates) to learn more about how this landmark treatment can provide you with the relief you deserve.
What is Dry Eye?
Evaporative dry eye occurs when the tear film (a lining of oil, water and mucus covering the surface of the eye) does not contain enough oil to protect the eye. This is often the result of a blockage in the meibomian glands, which are responsible for secreting oil.
The LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation technology combines heat and pulsatile pressure to address blockage in the meibomian glands. The procedure begins with anesthetic eye drops to ensure your comfort during treatment. A special disposable eye piece containing a lid warmer will be placed under your eye lid, and another piece will be placed outside the eye lids. You will be asked to close your eyes before the device is activated, applying gentle warmth and pressure on the eyelid. Over the course of about 12 minutes, the device will melt the blockages in the meibomian glands, setting the stage for long-term dry eye treatment.
Patients who suffer from dry eye are likely to experience one or more of the following symptoms on a regular basis:
- Dry, gritty feeling eyes
- Red eyes
- Itchy eyes
- Discomfort or a burning sensation
- Eyes that feel tired or strained
- Sensitivity to light
- Visual disturbances
When these symptoms persist, they can interfere with quality of life and make it difficult to perform even the simplest of tasks. Patients who have experienced prolonged dry eye symptoms should schedule a consultation with one of our doctors at any of our locations including Chicago, Hoffman Estates or Highland Park. If the examination shows more than mild signs of dry eyes, we will examine the eyes further with the LipiView® interferometer. This exam, which allows us to view detailed images of the tear film, is quick and painless. This evaluation will reveal if a patient is a good candidate for LipiFlow® treatment.
LipiFlow® is the only long-term treatment for dry eyes. While traditional dry eyes treatment, such as artificial tears, can offer only temporary relief of dry eye symptoms, LipiFlow® treats the source of the problem in order to effectively manage the condition. In clinical studies, LipiFlow® treatment was shown to provide sustained results in more than 79% of patients.
