Clearer Vision Through Premium Lenses

Refractive Lens Exchange Chicago

A closeup view of an elderly person's pale, green eye. While LASIK is a highly effective treatment for many, it is not the right choice for all of our patients. Fortunately, there are LASIK alternatives. Refractive lens exchange, available through our Chicago practice, involves removing a patient’s natural crystalline lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). These lenses can provide clearer vision for patients suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia. Contact us today to learn more about how refractive lens exchange can benefit you.

Because there are a variety of IOL's that can address a range of vision impairments, the refractive lens exchange procedure can correct mild to severe cases of presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. However, not all patients experiencing one of these conditions is a suitable candidate for refractive lens exchange. This procedure is best suited for:

  • Patients suffering from presbyopia who would like to decrease their dependency on reading glasses
  • Older patients
  • Patients who require corrections for severe myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
  • Patients with especially thin corneas
  • Patients who are poor candidates for LASIK and want LASIK alternatives

The best way to determine your candidacy for refractive lens exchange, or any vision enhancement procedure, is to schedule a consultation with us.

The Procedure

Refractive lens exchange is an outpatient procedure that is typically completed in just under thirty minutes. After numbing the eye, a small incision is made at the edge of the patient’s cornea. A small probe in then inserted through the incision in order to remove the crystalline lens. Once the natural lens has been removed, an intraocular lens is implanted in its place. This intraocular lens will become a permanent, functional part of the patient’s eye. Immediately following surgery, there is usually an adjustment period in which the brain learns to cooperate with the IOL. During this time, vision may be slightly distorted. However, this will eventually subside, allowing you to experience the full benefits of the treatment.

We offer our patients premium IOL's that accommodate a range of visual impairment issues. Our premium multifocal lenses provide clear vision at ranges near, far, and in between. We also offer toric lenses designed for patients who suffer from astigmatism. Our doctors help each patient make the best decision regarding which type of intraocular lens is best for them.
