Randy Epstein, MD and Parag Majmudar, MD, both Corneal Specialists at Chicago Cornea Consultants, were recently granted approval to treat patients as young as 12 years old. Collagen cross-linking (CXL) is a simple, relatively new treatment that attempts to stop the progression of Keratoconus. The combination of the UV light and the riboflavin activates molecules that strengthen the bonds between and within collagen fibrils in the cornea. This stiffens and strengthens the cornea which causes the cornea to become less steep, resulting in visual improvement.

“Dr. Epstein was interviewed on ABC’s local affiliate, WLS-TC Channel 7, which was broadcast on the 5:00 pm news on 5/21/10, regarding Rush’s acquisition of state-of-the art confocal and OCT microscopes, along with a Pentacam corneal imaging system. These are useful in the diagnosis of difficult corneal infections, such as those caused by Acanthamoeba. This equipment purchase was made possible by a donation made to Rush by a grateful patient.”

Chicago Cornea Consultants launches a new clinical trial of collagen cross linking (CXL) for keratoconus. CXL is a relatively non-invasive procedure that is being performed in virtually every country as a standard treatment for keratoconus. It has been shown to stop the progression of keratoconus. However, it is not a procedure approved in the United States. Drs. Majmudar and Epstein have been selected as one of eight sites throughout the USA and are actively enrolling patients for this study. If you or a loved one has keratoconus, this treatment may be appropriate. CXL may help slow down or even stop the progression of keratoconus, and may possibly even prevent the need for a corneal transplant. For more information, please contact Jim Nykaza at 847.882.5900.
