A Chicago Native

A Chicago native, Dr. Epstein grew up in West Rogers Park and earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana. Dr. Epstein received his Medical Degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his ophthalmology residency at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center. Following his residency, Dr. Epstein completed fellowships in both ocular immunology and cornea-external diseases/refractive surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, where he was the recipient of the highly regarded NIH/National Eye Institute National Research Service Award.

One of Chicago's Top Doctors

In 1986, Dr. Epstein returned to his Chicago roots to join Dr. Richard Dennis in practice and was soon appointed to the faculty of Rush Medical College. His areas of medical specialty include refractive lens exchanges, corneal surgeries, and the management of complications resulting from these procedures. In addition, Dr. Randy Epstein is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and numerous ophthalmologists, both nationally and internationally. In addition to being listed numerous times as one of Chicago’s “Top Doctors” by Chicago Magazine, he has received the Honor Award and, in 2004, the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Emory University Distinguished Alumnus Award.

A Renowned Educator and Advocate

Dr. Randy Epstein is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Rush University and is a prominent member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, (former Ophthalmology Risk Management Sub-Committee Chairman), Chicago Medical Society, Lake County Medical Society, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, International Society of Refractive Surgery (former Committee Chairman), Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Chicago Ophthalmological Society (former Annual Program Director) and American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Epstein served for many years on the Executive Board of the Advisory Council of our local Eye-Bank, “Eversight Illinois”, helping to raise funds for eye research and to assist patients in need of corneal transplants.  

In his spare time, Dr. Epstein enjoys spending time with his family, downhill skiing, playing golf, working out, running, traveling, scuba diving, and training for the annual Chicago Marathon.
