Restore Your Eyesight

When sagging eyelids impair vision, blepharoplasty and/or ptosis repair can help to restore your eyesight. Upper blepharoplasty is performed to trim excess skin in the upper lids, while ptosis repair actually lifts the eyelids to improve the position of the eyelids relative to the eye itself. The surgery can yield transformative benefits, elevating your self-image and confidence as well as improving your field of vision.

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess skin, tissue, and sometimes fat from the eyelids. The procedure can not only improve the upper facial appearance but can also correct vision problems related to low-hanging lids.

Blepharoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis and involves making incisions in the natural creases of the eyelids to minimize scarring. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the surgery but typically takes a few weeks. Blepharoplasty is generally considered to be a safe and effective procedure with a high success rate.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons. As people age, their eyelids can stretch, and the muscles supporting them can weaken, causing excess skin and fat to gather above the eyelids. This can lead to droopy upper lids, sagging eyebrows, and in some cases, vision impairment.

The surgery is performed by making incisions in the natural folds or creases of the upper eyelids. Scarring is virtually unnoticeable after the incisions have healed. After upper blepharoplasty, the facial appearance looks more youthful, well-rested, and inviting.

Upper Eyelid Ptosis Repair

Ptosis repair is performed when the eyelid's position is too low, leading to a droopy/" sleepy" appearance and issues with a decreased visual field. Many patients state that they see better when they "hold their eyelids up." Ptosis repair surgery is performed to alleviate this issue.

The procedure is performed by making incisions on the inner side of the eyelid and shortening the muscle that helps lift the eyelid. This results in a higher eyelid position, a more youthful appearance, and an improved field of vision.

Determining your candidacy

In order to ensure that blepharoplasty will be a safe and successful procedure, you will meet with one of our caring providers to undergo a detailed evaluation and review of your medical history. Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are generally healthy individuals over 30 with no medical conditions that might interfere with healing. They should be non-smokers with a positive outlook and realistic goals.

Individuals struggling with excess fatty deposits, puffiness, or loose, sagging skin that affects the natural contour of the eyelids will benefit strongly from the procedure, as will those with impaired vision due to low-hanging lids. Patients who currently have a serious eye disease may need to postpone cosmetic surgery.

Recovery after Blepharoplasty/Ptosis Repair

Recovery after blepharoplasty typically takes around ten days on average. During this time, getting plenty of rest and avoiding activities such as heavy lifting and exercise is essential. You may experience temporary side effects such as blurred vision, watery eyes, light sensitivity, double vision, and puffy, numb eyelids. Bruising and swelling are also common after the procedure, with upper eyelid bruising decreasing within 1-2 weeks and lower eyelid bruises taking 2-4 weeks to heal.

To speed up the healing process, it's recommended to rest your eyes and ice them as much as possible during the first 48 hours after surgery. It's also important to follow your healthcare provider's instructions for post-operative care, including lubricating ointment, taking pain medication, and avoiding certain activities.

While recovery after blepharoplasty/ptosis repair may take some time, following proper post-operative care instructions and giving your body time to heal can help ensure the best possible results. Most patients consider the downtime well worth it to achieve a more youthful, vibrant appearance, optimized vision, and enhanced self-confidence.
