Can I Get LASIK If I Have Eye Allergies?

In the springtime, interest in LASIK surgery typically spikes. With the new growth of spring comes an increase of pollen and other eye irritants. For contact wearers, springtime allergies can make it difficult to wear the lenses. If you suffer from eye allergies, you may wonder if LASIK is right for you. You long for the freedom that laser eye surgery can provide, but you wonder if it is safe to undergo the treatment. In many cases, eye allergies will not preclude you from LASIK. At Chicago Cornea Consultants™l Consultants, Ltd., we will evaluate your eye health and determine whether you are a candidate for the procedure.

An Intro to LASIK

LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. This elective procedure has an astonishing 96 percent success rate, and most patients enjoy 20/20 vision or better following their surgery. Your doctor will first create a thin flap in your cornea. Then he will use a computer-guided excimer laser to reshape your cornea. As he removes small amounts of tissue, he will correct the way that light refracts in your eye so it focuses correctly on your retina. When the procedure is complete, he will place the flap back down on your eye. The tissues will quickly heal on their own.

Allergies vs. Dry Eye

Eye allergies can manifest themselves in several ways. Some of the most common symptoms of eye allergies include:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Excess tearing
  • Redness

If you suffer from any of these side effects, you are likely a good candidate for LASIK. Your doctor will also consider your overall health and the shape of your cornea before he makes a final decision regarding your candidacy. On the other hand, if you suffer from dry eyes, whether from allergies or another cause, LASIK may not be a good solution. Dry eye is one of the most common risks of laser eye surgery. The side effect is usually temporary. However, if you already suffer from the condition, you are more likely to experience permanent dry eye. In this case, eye drops or another treatment may be a better way to reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

LASIK Can Actually Improve the Symptoms of Eye Allergies

If you do qualify for LASIK, you could enjoy reduced allergy symptoms, as well as improved vision. Laser eye surgery can reduce or eliminate your need for corrective lenses. Since contact lenses can seriously exacerbate allergy symptoms, you will also enjoy freedom from itchy, uncomfortable eyes. Additionally, you can enjoy an improved appearance. Like many patients, you may wear your glasses more often in the springtime as you attempt to control your allergy symptoms. Following LASIK, you will likely enjoy clear vision without bulky frames and lenses.

Traditionally, presbyopia, which happens to all of us as we age, has always meant glasses for clear reading vision. It's a condition not even correctable by laser vision correction. Luckily, there is an option. Refractive lens exchange allows patients a clear alternative to reading glasses and is capable of reducing or eliminating presbyopia by using an advanced multifocal intraocular lens.

Keratoconus describes a cornea that weakens as collagen fibers deteriorate, causing the cornea to adapt a cone-like shape. Keratoconus can cause blurred vision, light sensitivity, glares, and decreased night vision. In its early stages, keratoconus may be treated with the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus is also one of the most common reasons for corneal transplant, and one of the most successful. It's estimated that a million or more Americans have glaucoma and don't even know it. People with glaucoma often do not experience any symptoms until they begin losing their peripheral vision. One of the scariest things about glaucoma is that it usually has no symptoms in the early stages, earning glaucoma the name "silent thief of sight." Anyone can be at risk, so it's important to have your vision regularly examined.
