Conventional vs. Custom LASIK

LASIK surgery has helped millions of people worldwide achieve excellent vision without relying on prescription corrective lenses. Over time, the technology has evolved, allowing for even greater accuracy and greater safety in correcting corneal imperfections.

At our Chicago laser eye surgery center, we are proud to offer the latest in LASIK surgery: custom LASIK vision correction. We’d like to take a brief moment right now to show you why custom LASIK surgery is superior in many ways to traditional LASIK. We are committed to providing patients with the best possible eye care and vision enhancement, and will strive to remain at the forefront of vision treatment options.

About Traditional LASIK

Traditional LASIK surgery is designed to address refractive errors, which you may know better by the names myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During a Chicago LASIK procedure, a flap is created in the topmost layer of the cornea (also known as the epithelium). Through this epithelial flap, the laser will safely reshape the cornea so that a patient’s vision is improved.

About Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK is practically identical to traditional LASIK save for one major difference: advanced digital mapping. This custom cornea LASIK technology allows surgeons to pinpoint minute imperfections on the cornea’s surface. Essentially, all LASIK surgery is customized to the patient, but custom LASIK is especially accurate. The digital map is fed into a computer that guides the laser during surgery, allowing for correction of both higher order aberrations and lower order aberrations.

Lower Order Aberrations and Higher Order Aberrations

Lower order aberrations refer to basic refractive errors that we mentioned before: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism. Higher order aberrations refer to vision problems such as glare, starbursts, halos, poor night vision, and poor color sensitivity.

Traditional LASIK is only able to address lower order aberrations and cannot sufficiently treat higher order aberrations. Custom LASIK surgery is able to address both lower order aberrations and higher order aberrations thanks to the precision of the digital mapping technology.

The Advantages of Custom LASIK are Clear

Since custom LASIK allows patients to experience enhanced vision when compared to traditional LASIK, it is obvious that our ophthalmologists and optometrists serving Chicago wish to provide this highly accurate treatment to patients. We would love for you to come in for a visit so we can determine if custom LASIK is the best option for you and your eye care needs.

Is 20/20 vision more likely with custom LASIK?

We don’t feel it is our place to make any guarantees about 20/20 vision or better with custom LASIK. What we can say is that the increased accuracy of custom LASIK technology does provide patients with excellent vision that is clearer and crisper.

Traditionally, presbyopia, which happens to all of us as we age, has always meant glasses for clear reading vision. It's a condition not even correctable by laser vision correction. Luckily, there is an option. Refractive lens exchange allows patients a clear alternative to reading glasses and is capable of reducing or eliminating presbyopia by using an advanced multifocal intraocular lens.

Keratoconus describes a cornea that weakens as collagen fibers deteriorate, causing the cornea to adapt a cone-like shape. Keratoconus can cause blurred vision, light sensitivity, glares, and decreased night vision. In its early stages, keratoconus may be treated with the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus is also one of the most common reasons for corneal transplant, and one of the most successful. Call any of our offices and ask to speak to the Vision Correction Surgical Coordinator, or use the contact form below.

It's estimated that a million or more Americans have glaucoma and don't even know it. People with glaucoma often do not experience any symptoms until they begin losing their peripheral vision. One of the scariest things about glaucoma is that it usually has no symptoms in the early stages, earning glaucoma the name "silent thief of sight." Anyone can be at risk, so it's important to have your vision regularly examined.
