What is an eye emergency?

When it comes to the human body’s most delicate organs, the vast majority are protected by skin, muscle, and bones. The most notable exceptions are the eyes. Despite being among the most fragile of the body’s organs, the eyes are constantly being exposed to the elements and to potential hazards, from flying debris to dangerous chemicals. If you or someone you love is experiencing a possible eye emergency, don’t try to figure out on your own whether it is serious enough to seek our help. It is better to err on the side of caution and seek out immediate care.

Common conditions that could constitute an eye emergency include:

  • Persistent or recurring eye pain
  • Trauma to one or both eyes
  • Partial or complete vision loss
  • Vision that becomes obscured, as if by clouds
  • Abnormal sensitivity to light
  • The entrance of a foreign object into the eye
  • Painful redness
  • Vision that becomes dim or less perceptive of color
  • An increase in floaters
  • Burns caused by exposure to steam or chemicals
  • The appearance of flashes of light across the field of vision
  • Double vision
  • Pupils that are differently sized
  • Swelling of the eyes
  • Blood or any other discharge from the eyes
  • A laceration of the eye

It is important that you do not try to treat an eye emergency on your own. Do not apply any sort of medication or drops to the affected eye or eyes. If a foreign object has penetrated the eye, please do not attempt to remove it. Treatment should be administered only by a trained and skilled professional to ensure your safety and the health of your eye.

Your emergency visit will be focused on the resolution of the immediate threat to your eye and the relief of any pain resulting from that threat. After your visit, we will schedule a follow-up appointment during which we will evaluate your eye and perform any non-emergency procedures that are necessary.

Remember that, when it comes to your eye, it is better to be safe than to be sorry.

Traditionally, presbyopia, which happens to all of us as we age, has always meant glasses for clear reading vision. It's a condition not even correctable by laser vision correction. Luckily, there is an option. Refractive lens exchange allows patients a clear alternative to reading glasses and is capable of reducing or eliminating presbyopia by using an advanced multifocal intraocular lens.

Keratoconus describes a cornea that weakens as collagen fibers deteriorate, causing the cornea to adapt a cone-like shape. Keratoconus can cause blurred vision, light sensitivity, glares, and decreased night vision. In its early stages, keratoconus may be treated with the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus is also one of the most common reasons for corneal transplant, and one of the most successful. Call any of our offices and ask to speak to the Vision Correction Surgical Coordinator, or use the contact form below.

It's estimated that a million or more Americans have glaucoma and don't even know it. People with glaucoma often do not experience any symptoms until they begin losing their peripheral vision. One of the scariest things about glaucoma is that it usually has no symptoms in the early stages, earning glaucoma the name "silent thief of sight." Anyone can be at risk, so it's important to have your vision regularly examined.
