Epi-LASIK Overview

If you would like to improve your vision, there are plenty of options to consider. Refractive surgery in particular has grown in popularity, allowing people suffering from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to see better without the need for corrective lenses. Advances in technology and new developments in techniques have allowed more people to undergo refractive surgery today than ever before. At our Chicago cornea surgery and vision correction center, we can discuss all of the different refractive surgery options in more detail. One in particular that we’d like to focus on right now is Epi-LASIK.

About Epi-LASIK

Epi-LASIK is a laser eye surgery that involves the reshaping of the cornea in order to correct refractive errors.

How Epi-LASIK Differs from Traditional LASIK

Though Epi-LASIK is similar to Chicago LASIK, there is a very important difference in the surgical procedure. During traditional LASIK surgery, a flap is created in the epithelium (the outermost layer of the cornea) in order to access and reshape the cornea. In Epi-LASEK, a special instrument is used to isolate a section of the epithelium and move it aside in order to access and reshape the cornea–no flap is created.

Who is a good candidate for Epi-LASIK?

The best candidates for Epi-LASIK are otherwise ideal for traditional LASIK surgery, meaning they:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have had a stable prescription for at least one year
  • Have not suffered from an eye infection in the last year
  • Are not pregnant

In most cases, Epi-LASIK is performed on LASIK candidates who have thin corneas, thus disqualifying them from traditional LASIK surgery. Our optometrists and ophthalmologists serving Chicago will be able to tell you if Epi-LASIK is ideal for your needs during your consultation.

The Epi-LASIK Procedure

During the Epi-LASIK surgery, eye drops will be administered to numb the eyes and to ensure the patient does not experience any discomfort. A special instrument called an epikeratome is then used in order to isolate a section of the epithelium and move it aside gently. The cornea is then reshaped using the surgical laser. Once the reshaping is completed, the section of the epithelium is carefully put back into position.

Recovering from Epi-LASIK

Recovering from Epi-LASIK is generally similar to recovering from LASIK. It’s important that patients have transportation from the surgical facility after Epi-LASIK as vision will be blurry following surgery. For the first day or two, we recommend that patients do not engage in any activities that may strain the eyes. Vision will improve gradually in the coming weeks and months.

The Results of Epi-LASIK

The results of Epi-LASIK are comparable to traditional LASIK, meaning far less reliance on corrective lenses and much clearer vision overall. This is a testament to the advances in vision correction technology and surgical techniques over the years.

Traditionally, presbyopia, which happens to all of us as we age, has always meant glasses for clear reading vision. It's a condition not even correctable by laser vision correction. Luckily, there is an option. Refractive lens exchange allows patients a clear alternative to reading glasses and is capable of reducing or eliminating presbyopia by using an advanced multifocal intraocular lens.

Keratoconus describes a cornea that weakens as collagen fibers deteriorate, causing the cornea to adapt a cone-like shape. Keratoconus can cause blurred vision, light sensitivity, glares, and decreased night vision. In its early stages, keratoconus may be treated with the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus is also one of the most common reasons for corneal transplant, and one of the most successful. It's estimated that a million or more Americans have glaucoma and don't even know it. People with glaucoma often do not experience any symptoms until they begin losing their peripheral vision. One of the scariest things about glaucoma is that it usually has no symptoms in the early stages, earning glaucoma the name "silent thief of sight." Anyone can be at risk, so it's important to have your vision regularly examined.
