6 Answers To Your LASIK Questions

Young Woman after LASIK Surgery

Anyone who’s had to wear glasses or contacts for most of their life has at least thought about having LASIK. But there’s a lot of mystique surrounding the idea of laser vision correction surgery.

The truth is, LASIK isn’t some new, experimental procedure. It’s been around for more than two decades and newer technology makes it safer than ever.

Still wondering about LASIK? Keep reading to get some common questions about the procedure answered!

Am I A Good Candidate For LASIK?

To get LASIK, you have to be over 18, in good health and have had stable vision for at least two years. You also need to have a thick enough cornea.

LASIK is performed by reshaping your cornea with a laser. To do this, a flap in the cornea gets made before the laser shapes the area under the flap.

If your cornea isn’t thick enough to allow for a flap, or if your prescription is too strong, then LASIK isn’t safe for you.

LASIK surgeons carefully screen patients to make sure only good candidates are approved. The only way to know if you’re a good candidate for LASIK is a consultation with Chicago Cornea Consultants™!

How Expensive Is LASIK?

The cost of LASIK varies for several reasons. This can include who is performing it, how strong your prescription is, and the technology.

At Chicago Cornea Consultants™, we perform IntraLase LASIK, meaning the procedure is bladeless! On average, LASIK costs about $2,000-$3,000 per eye.

This can sound like a scary number, but it’s important to realize that LASIK pays for itself in the long run. Several years of not having to buy glasses or contacts can save you a lot of money, after all!

Will The Surgery Hurt?

Nope! Your eyes will be completely numbed with eye drops. The most you may feel is a slight pressure when the corneal flap is being made.

It takes only seconds per eye to perform LASIK, making it more than worth it.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From LASIK?

The corneal flap doesn’t completely finish healing until six months after surgery. Most discomfort after LASIK goes away after a day or two. After this point, you’ll have to follow instructions from your doctor.

Most patients after LASIK can see an immediate improvement in their vision. This only gets better as recovery continues! You’ll be able to get back into your normal routine pretty quickly after the procedure.

Will LASIK Last Forever?

Your corneal tissue won’t grow back, so the changes made during LASIK will be permanent. That being said, LASIK doesn’t prevent the usual effects of aging.

As we get older, our vision tends to worsen. Many people with LASIK end up having to use reading glasses when they get older as most people do.

Where Is the Best Place To Get LASIK?

There are a lot of different places to get LASIK. Look for a reputable practice in your area, and be sure to do your research.

You want a good, well-reviewed surgeon. A less-than-average surgeon won’t blind you, but you may not get the best vision possible.

Traditionally, presbyopia, which happens to all of us as we age, has always meant glasses for clear reading vision. It's a condition not even correctable by laser vision correction. Luckily, there is an option. Refractive lens exchange allows patients a clear alternative to reading glasses and is capable of reducing or eliminating presbyopia by using an advanced multifocal intraocular lens.

Keratoconus describes a cornea that weakens as collagen fibers deteriorate, causing the cornea to adapt a cone-like shape. Keratoconus can cause blurred vision, light sensitivity, glares, and decreased night vision. In its early stages, keratoconus may be treated with the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus is also one of the most common reasons for corneal transplant, and one of the most successful. It's estimated that a million or more Americans have glaucoma and don't even know it. People with glaucoma often do not experience any symptoms until they begin losing their peripheral vision. One of the scariest things about glaucoma is that it usually has no symptoms in the early stages, earning glaucoma the name "silent thief of sight." Anyone can be at risk, so it's important to have your vision regularly examined.
